I’m going to level with you; as the title of this article suggests, I’m not American, I am in fact an Aussie, and as a gesture of goodwill before I bestow upon you my interpretation of modern America, I would like to gift you Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Paul Hogan. I’d gift you Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson, but I fear it would incite violence on a scale not seen since…well…Mel Gibson’s spousal abuse and Russell Crowe’s phone-throwing incident. On behalf of my fellow country-people, I offer my sincere apologies for Aussies who act badly abroad, can you forgive us? Alright I’ll throw in Chris Hemsworth just to sweeten the deal, but that’s my final offer! Anyway! I do pay close attention to the cultural and political ebbs and flows of the “land of the free and the home of the brave”. I mean, let’s face facts, if an […]

“Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.” Carl Sagan (American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences – deceased 1996) – Google it kids! I would like to preface this post by assuring all contributors that religious/spiritual people are always welcome to contribute to any discussion on this blog, as I want this to be an inclusive space. I wish to discuss the topic of Atheism without the proverbial descent into barb-trading between believers and non-believers (and everyone in between). There are some very destructive misconceptions about Atheism that I hope to clear up in this post. Incidentally, anyone who uses this post to preach, proselytise or denounce or attack contributors in any way will […]

Okay…so being a middle class, child free, white, heterosexual (the most persecuted of all of the ‘classes’…if Bill O’Reilly is to be believed), one of the most pressing topics of my generation, and my ‘people’, is the ethical treatment of animals, especially when it comes to human consumption of all things feathered, hoofed or gilled (not grilled…a little joke there). Indeed, it is ethical consumption that has plagued my people for tens of years;  largely because we are the only class in the animal kingdom that has the time, money and resources to ponder such ethical dilemmas. As the physical daily fight for survival is no longer an issue for my people, we have the time and energy to invest in fighting the new threats to humanity; conservatives; religious zealots/terrorists, bad drivers and finding a public library that is actually quiet… Okay, so that last point is a little artistic […]

I was never one of those kids who ‘had a dream’ so-to-speak, I never sat in my room looking at pictures of my mentors dreaming of following in their footsteps; I never lay awake at night plotting my plan for success in my chosen industry, and I never had a plan to reach a particular goal by the time I was 30 years of age. I would watch movie stars, musicians, politicians, sports personalities and entrepreneurs on television always projecting the same mantras; “always shoot for your dream”, “never let anyone stand in the way of your dream”, “just keep focussed on your dream”. Well, I was never lucky enough to have a particular dream that I could shoot for; not allow anyone to stand in the way of, or keep focussed on…and I was always envious of those who did. The reason I was envious is because to have a dream […]
